What Happens When We Die?

Death is a reality we all face, but what happens after we take our last breath? This question is one of life’s most important, and the Bible offers clear answers that can change how we view both death and life.

Death Is Not the End

In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus tells the story of two men: a rich man who lived in luxury and a poor man named Lazarus who suffered greatly. Both men died, but their experiences in eternity were vastly different. Lazarus was carried into God’s presence, while the rich man found himself in torment, separated from God forever.

This story teaches us three key truths about death:

1. Death Is an Appointment

Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment. ”Death is not random—it’s an unavoidable appointment we all must face. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, young or old; death comes for everyone. The question isn’t if you’ll die—it’s what happens next.

2. Death Is Separation

Death isn’t the end of existence; it’s a separation. The Bible describes three types of death:

Spiritual Death – Separation from fellowship with God due to sin (Genesis 2:17).

Physical Death – Separation of the soul from the body (Romans 5:12).

Eternal Death – Permanent separation from God (Luke 16:26).

In Luke 16, both men remained fully aware after death, but their eternal destinations were determined by their relationship with God during their earthly lives.

3. Eternity Is Certain

Death is not a blank screen—it’s the beginning of eternity. Lazarus experienced comfort in God’s presence, while the rich man faced torment and regret. This leads to life’s most important question:

Where will you spend eternity?

What Will You Do With This Truth?

Jesus said in John 11:25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.” Your response to Jesus determines your eternal destiny.

For Non-Believers: Consider placing your faith in Christ today to secure eternal life with Him instead of eternal separation from Him.

For Believers: Live with eternity in mind—invest your time and energy into what truly matters instead of fearing death.

For Those Grieving: Take comfort in the hope of heaven and God’s presence during difficult times.

Death is inevitable—but eternity is a choice. Where you spend it depends on what you do with Jesus today. Will your appointment with death bring you into God’s presence or separate you from Him forever? The choice is yours!
