There are seasons of life when everything seems to be going wrong at once. You pray, but the wind keeps blowing. You believe God, but the waves keep crashing. You try everything you know to do, but nothing seems to stop the storm. Eventually you discover that your money, talent, intelligence, connections, and strength cannot solve everything. Acts 27 tells the story of the Apostle Paul experiencing exactly that kind of storm. Paul was being transported across the Mediterranean as a prisoner on his way to Rome. There were 276 people aboard the ship when they encountered a violent storm. For fourteen days they were driven across the sea. They threw cargo overboard. They threw the ship’s equipment overboard. The sun and stars disappeared behind the storm. Eventually Luke writes that they had given up all hope of being saved. Yet Paul hadn’t. In the middle of a ship filled with frightened people, Paul stood and told them to have courage. God had spoken to him. Paul was going to stand before Caesar, and God had promised that the lives of everyone aboard would be spared. The storm was still raging, but Paul had something to hold onto.
