Freedom Begins Within
Our natural instinct is to believe that peace will come when our circumstances improve.
"If I could just get a different job..."
"If this relationship would change..."
"If this burden would finally disappear..."
Yet a new location does not automatically produce a new life. A person can move across the country and still carry the same fear, bitterness, anxiety, offense, or insecurity they had before they packed the moving truck.
Changing your surroundings does not necessarily change your soul. That's why God is often more interested in removing the chains than immediately opening the gate.
The Prison Wasn't Peter's Greatest Problem
Imagine if the angel had simply opened every prison door while Peter remained bound by chains.
How far would he have gotten? Not very far...
The prison wasn't Peter's greatest problem anymore. The chains were.
Many times we ask God to open doors while He is patiently working to remove what has us bound. Before He changes what's happening around us, He often begins changing what's happening within us.
There is a tremendous difference between being in a prison and having the prison in you.
Freedom Changes How We Walk
After Peter's chains fell, the angel told him to get up, put on his sandals, wrap himself in his cloak, and follow.
Peter wasn't earning his freedom. He was responding to it.
Likewise, God does not tell us to clean ourselves up before He works in our lives. He sets us free, then empowers us to walk in that freedom one faithful step at a time.
As Peter followed the angel, he walked past guards who once represented everything standing between him and freedom. Eventually, he came to the iron gate leading into the city, and it opened by itself.
The gate did not produce Peter's freedom... it revealed it.
God Is Still Writing the Story
When Peter finally realized what had happened, he declared that the Lord had rescued him "from all that the Jewish people were expecting."
Everyone around Peter thought they already knew how the story would end.
Herod thought he knew.
The soldiers thought they knew.
The religious leaders thought they knew.
But God wasn't reading their script.
People may form opinions about your future, your family, your failures, or your faith, but God alone writes the final chapter. While others see chains, He sees freedom. While others see a prison, He sees a testimony in the making.
